What Is Progressive Overload?

Progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress placed on the body during training over time. Your muscles adapt to any given stimulus within a few sessions — once they have adapted, that same stimulus no longer drives growth. The only way to continue making gains is to consistently present your body with a challenge that exceeds what it has already adapted to.

The 4 Most Common Progressive Overload Mistakes

1. Progressing too fast

The most common mistake, especially in beginners. Adding too much weight too quickly sacrifices form and increases injury risk without producing better results.
